San Jose began as the tribal home of the Ohlone Native Americans. The area’s first European settlers arrived in 1769 and founded the city of San Jose in 1777 as a farming community. Following the 1846 annexation of California, San Jose became the second incorporated city in the state in 1850.
Although San Jose remained largely an agricultural area until the 1950s, the city has since undergone extensive growth in electronics and technology. San Jose is the third largest city in California and the largest city in Silicon Valley.
