THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR’S 4/22/20 SAFTEY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

On April 22, 2020, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued “safety tips” intended to educate employers of construction workers about how to avoid exposure to the coronavirus. OSHA is tasked with ensuring that employers provide safe and healthy workplaces for their employees.

The safety tips recommended for the construction industry include the following:

  • Encouraging workers to stay at home if they are sick;
  • Training workers on the proper use of protective clothing and equipment;
  • Allowing workers to wear masks;
  • Continuing to use standard personal protective equipment;
  • Advising workers to avoid physical contact and practice social distancing;
  • Providing access to soap and water or alcohol-based materials;
  • Encouraging workers to report any safety and health concerns;

OSHA’S new recommendations for the construction industry signals a growing concern about the impact of the coronavirus on construction workers, and the Federal Government’s intention to ensure that the working conditions of this class of workers are safe and healthy.
